Monetizing with Adsense

Ensure your ads are mobile responsive and automatically adapt to different screen sizes - this way you can create a great user experience and continue to earn revenue when people view your blog on a smartphone or tablet.

Guide to blog monetisation, here`s how:
  1. Your content
  2. Ad networks
  3. Target the right audience
  4. The ad glossary
  5. Other ways to monetise your content
  6. When your ads are up and running, what to do.

Your content

Your content can introduce your readers to new concepts and resources, help them troubleshoot problems, entertain them and inform their decision making process.

But understand the following: For the most part, readers expect to consume your content without paying for it, even if you pour considerable time and resources into making it. So how can you monetise content your audience expects to get for free? One option is to sell advertising spaces alongside your content to relevant advertisers who are keen to reach your audience.
For small businesses, finding advertisers could be challenging and time-consuming, particularly when it comes time to arranging and managing ad campaigns with a large number of publishers.

Her are the online advertising networks that can help:

Ad networks
Online advertising networks bring together advertisers and publishers using automated targeting technology. Google and Facebook have large ad networks, and there are also others like AOL Advertising or Yahoo's publisher network dedicated to placing ads at scale across the Internet.

Turning your blog or website into a destination for ads is quite simple. You sign up with an ad network, add some code on your site and start displaying ads. Advertisers pay the network for the ads, and then that revenue is shared between you and the network. The largest share of revenue generally goes to you, the publisher.

Target the right audience

To ensure the ads on your blog reach the right audience, there are a number of targeting methods ad networks may use in assisting to achieve high relevancy.
  • Contextual targeting allows advertisers to place ads on a web page based on the words and subject matter of that page. Similar to a keyword-targeted search campaign, advertisers choose a small number of keywords on a particular theme and then the network matches their ads to pages or articles on the same subject.
  • Placement targeting allows advertisers to choose a number of specific sites for their advertising. This affords the advertiser more control over where their ads are shown.
  • Remarketing or personalised advertising lets advertisers target users based on their past browsing behavior. Although this strategy is based on targeting people rather than content, it can still produce good results for publishers. Since ads are tailored to the known interests of visitors, users may be more inclined to click.

The ad glossary

Glossary to some of the most common words used:
  • Cost-per-click (CPC): Is the money you earn each time a user clicks on your ad.
  • Cost Per Mille (CPM): CPM mean "cost per 1000 impressions." Advertisers running CPM ads set their desired price per 1000 ads served and pay each time their ad appears. As a publisher, you'll earn revenue each time a CPM ad is served to your page and viewed by a user. The number is useful because it allows you to compare the efficiency of ads across networks or campaigns.
  • Revenue Per Mille (RPM)Represents the estimated earnings you'd accrue for every 1000 impressions you receive. RPM doesn't represent how much you have actually earned; rather, it's calculated by dividing your estimated earnings by the number of page views, impressions, or queries you received, then multiplying by 1000 [RPM = (Estimated earnings / Number of page views) * 1000].
  • Clickthrough Rate (CTR): The clickthrough rate is the percentage of impressions that led to a click.
  • Viewability: Whether an ad on the Web is typically seen on a user's screen. Sometimes ads are said to be shown, but in reality users might need to scroll down to see them. AdWords, for example, lets advertisers choose 'above-the-fold' targeting, which guarantees that an ad is viewable when the page loads.

Native advertising: Do you need it?

What it is.

Native ads are paid ads that have the goal of being “so cohesive with the page content, assimilated into the design, and consistent with the platform behavior that the viewer simply feels that they belong.”

Native ads allow you to have an ad styled to fit within the page and it’s surrounding content, unlike traditional display banners. They are designed to match the look, feel, and function of your site.

Why does it matter?

Since most people these days, access the Internet from a mobile phone, you need to prioritize a mobile first user experience. This shift in thinking requires a change in the way we approach our ads too.

You need to put a lot of effort into shaping your site to meet the high expectations of a clean and mobile-optimized user experience. It’s just as  important to experiment with how you deliver ads to meet those user expectations and retain users’ interest in your site. So native ads may open up new earning opportunities on your site where traditional ad formats weren’t appropriate before. Ad formats, like banner ads, are effective but sometimes limited by size and placements. Native Ads can be customized to fit seamlessly within your content’s look and feel.

Do you need it?

Supporting and offering this ad format will provide you with access to a huge portion of the market for advertiser budgets. Additionally, as mobile consumers increasingly drive the publishing industry, native advertising is a key strategy for  connecting with that audience and  delivering a profitable mobile experience.

If you implement native ads, do the following:
  • Prioritize your customer: Consider your users’ expectations of your site and how they’ll respond to the type of ads you choose. Native ads meet users’ expectations by seamlessly fitting within your site’s user experience.
  • Optimize for user experience and ad revenue: It’s important to consider how to create the best user experience while maximizing your ad revenue. Strike a balance between content and ads by testing new native ad units and formats to measure their impact on revenue and user engagement.

Are you ready to get started? With 54% of global marketing leaders already using native advertising, native ads are the solution to help grow your ad earnings.2

Mobile Marketing Is A Prority

Mobile Marketing

If your brand isn’t into Mobile Marketing, you need to start right away. More and more companies are taking advantage of it. you need to start now -- or you'll be left far behind your competitors.
Here are some reasons why marketing managers and must make mobile marketing a priority:

1. Mobile reaches a newer and broader audience.

The fact to day is that some people don’t use desktops and laptops any longer? More and more people are using mobile devices exclusively. If you aren't marketing on mobile, you're not reaching these potential customers at all.

2. Social media also offers ad platforms.

Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, and other platforms have realized the potential of mobile marketing, and they've evolved their ad platforms to allow you to easily target mobile customers. You can get started simply by clicking a button. If you already are using social media advertising, this change takes mere minutes.

3. Because Google said so.

Google’s mobile update actively penalizes websites that haven’t started to consider mobile marketing. Your site should be responsive and easy to browse on mobile devices. Google will slap your website down in the search rankings. These penalties are becoming stricter over time. If your company hasn’t felt the impact yet, you soon will. If you start marketing on mobile for a reason, this should be the most important.

4. Mobile opens up virtual reality and other possibilities.

Exciting technologies like virtual reality inclusions enable mobile ads to become more engaging and effective. The sheer number of options mean it's never been easier to turn a profit from mobile marketing. There’s something for every business in every industry.

5. You can hit them again.

If your strategy also targets desktops, remember it's likely your audience is browsing on mobile devices as well. It can take multiple attempts to reach a customer and resonate with him or her. If you miss the chance on a laptop, you could connect on a smartphone.

6. It's going to get more expensive.

Costs have risen many times over in the past year or so, and for no apparent reason. It all boils down to an increasing amount of competition in the market. F.eks, Facebook advertising is a prime example of what can happen when an advertising method becomes popular.
The same can also be said for mobile marketing. You will have to start sooner or later. So its better to do it now, when testing costs are far cheaper than they will be in the future. If you wait until later, it will cost you more money.

7. It's personal.

Mobile devices are different. They're individual and more personal accessories that people carry with them at all time. You don't get the same psychological effect with any other media. So brands that always look to get closer to their target audience, this shold be the ultimate devices.

Summary

Companies who wait will find it harder to climb aboard, and they'll have to pay more to do it. These seven reasons make the case for every marketing manager to go mobile.
Mobile marketing is a more personalized form of marketing because it allows you to get closer to consumers than ever before. This alone can make it more likely to convert viewers into paying customers. Mobile marketing is here to stay, and there are reasons to belive that it will gain a bigger position as time goes on.

Mobile Search

The internet will become increasingly detached from the traditional computer over the four years to 2018, greatly enhancing the reach of search engines. “50% of mobile searches have local intent,” according to Bing for mobile.
In the mobile market, advertisers are particularly keen to target users who are very close to making decisions, such as which restaurant to visit for dinner or which product to buy at a store.
According to Google, among all the mobile searches, 29% are restaurants related and 15% are consumers electronics related.

Mobile searches set to outpace the number of computer searches by 2015.

Micro-Moments

We knew this was coming, but Google confirmed that more searches are conducted on smartphones than desktops and tablets in 10 countries. Google made the announcement official during a livestreamed event in which it introduced several mobile-centric ad formats and tools.

Google is developing a new portfolio of display ad formats and tools for advertisers to use across

The company says they’re designed specifically for mobile.
Engagement ads leverage advertisers’ existing brand assets and repackage them into rich, media-centric HTML5 ads. One example that Google gave includes two states: a small “invitation” banner with a glimpse at the hidden media, followed by an “expanded” state (shown left) that includes a small carousel for switching between a related video, a map and an image gallery.

Google concluded that the linear path from discovery to purchase has been replaced with “micro-moments” in which we use our phones in bursts of activity.
  • Time spent per web visit fell 18 percent as mobile’s share of web sessions has risen by 20 percent in the past year, says Google.
  • Near me” searches doubled in the past year; 80 % of those searches come from mobile
These is some of the changes instituted so far this year,

Cloud + mobile = supercharged growth for small businesses

India’s small businesses aren’t small when it comes to economic impact. They employ over 106 million people, make up almost a quarter of the workforce, and contribute close to half of the nation’s manufacturing output. As the country looks to drive growth, create jobs and increase exports as part of the Digital India initiative, we teamed up with Deloitte to see how cloud and mobile tools could help small businesses support these national goals, and the results are striking.

The new report, “
Connected Small Business — UnlockingIndia’s digital potential” finds that businesses that use cloud and mobile tools are more profitable, more innovative, export more and have happier, more productive staff. Compared to offline businesses, those that use cloud and mobile tools grow 27% annually, are four times more innovative and are 65% more likely to be exporting.

Mobile Friendly Web Design

Focus On Mobile Friendly Web Design

On April 21 Google is going to be rolling out a mobile optimization algorithm. According to Google’s "Zineb Ait Bahajji" from the Webmaster Trends team, this is going to be one of the biggest updates we’ve seen from Google to date in terms of how many people will be affected, bigger than Panda and Penguin, although no specific number was given.

While April 21 is the day that’s since been labeled the “Mobile-Pocalypse,” it’s important that small businesses start putting mobile best practices into action immediately. The efforts you’re making now will matter come April 21, and if you wait until just a few days before, it could be too late. Fortunately, Google is making this update very easy for us by telling us exactly what mistakes most businesses are making when it comes to mobile.
As discussed above, Google actually created a guide that outlines all of the most common mistakes that they find Webmasters make when they try and get their websites mobile-friendly.

Mobile SEO

Mobile-optimization will become more important.

Optimizing for mobile has been a significant priority for businesses in 2014, and 2015 will be the year that mobile strategies move beyond simply having a responsive site or mobile app, and focus on mobile-optimized content and social media marketing.
Google has been placing additional emphasis on how mobile-friendly sites are: mobile usability is now “relevant for optimal search results.” This emphasis is apparent in the recent launch of a new feature in Google Webmaster Tools called Mobile Usability, so, Mobile Usability Now a Search Ranking Factor?

In latter half of 2015 we will see many businesses finally incorporating mobile into all areas of their digital marketing: a fully responsive website, mobile ads, and separate content specifically for mobile website users. Businesses will also begin to realize the necessity of having a mobile social media strategy that considers how mobile users consume and interact with social media posts.

Mobile-first approach

Mobile is going to be more and more important as the time we spend on our mobile devices increases. Already now, you should have a responsive website in place, especially since Google has announced that it will prefer mobile-friendly websites in the SERPs. Mobile will be part of a more integrated approach, especially when it comes to marketing activities.

Many marketing leaders are advocating a mobile-first approach when creating content. Is not enough to just create an infographic and publish it. You have to take into consideration how this graphic will be displayed on smaller screens, or people will lose interest quickly if they have to keep zooming in and out.
Having content that is mobile friendly or creating a holistic mobile experience through an app are just a few options available for brands to engage their consumers on mobile.

The mobile experience

Mobile technology is finding its way into pockets everywhere, and people are becoming more comfortable with it as a means of searching.Forty six percent of searchers now use mobile exclusively to do product research, and the majority of mobile searches are local specific. Since users can search on the fly, they’re far more likely to make local searches.
Google and other search engines are doing more to respond to this trend. They’re collecting more information about their users’ locations and search histories, and doing everything they can to give them local-specific results. That means, even if you have a huge national authority, you could easily get outranked by a similar company simply because of their proximity to the searcher.

Mobile Optimisation

What is Mobile Optimisation?

It means converting your “desktop” website into a format that can be read on any mobile device. It eliminates the need for zooming; gives easy access to contact information; and easy navigation to minimise hitting the wrong link.

Always ‘redy’ and waiting to be started, but mobile optimisation or a responsive site is fast becoming a must.
Mobile traffic are now bigger than desktop traffic. And we all knew it would happen, but now it is here. The majority of users will use more than one device to search, consider and purchase. The majority of these users will use more than one device within a 24 hour period.
Remember: You need to ‘be where your users are’, if you want to succeed on web. This doesn’t just mean social platforms, via remarketing etc. You need to be usable on mobile. Even if your site is specifically not designed to convert on mobile, users need to be able to use your site and find information to keep them on the path to conversion instead of getting frustrated and seeking out an alternative.
F. Eks: Google see having a non-mobile optimised site as providing a lower quality experience to the user, and they don’t like that. If you want to see your rankings improve, you need a mobile optimised site.

Google have a great little guide in their Developer section about creating mobile friendly websites which you can visit:   What is Mobile optimisation?

Retailers today often have hundreds or thousands of products, but a recent study shows they only advertise an average of 49% of their inventory with search ads. There are two main reasons for this. One is that advertisers just can’t manage millions of keywords and bids on their own. The other is that they often don’t see the value of their long-tail inventory items.........

Introducing Google Tag Manager for Mobile Apps

Mobile Apps pose a unique set of challenges for marketers and developers. On the web, you can iterate on content and features in near-real-time and deploy conversion tracking, Remarketing, analytics and other tags to measure the effects on your users. Apps, on the other hand, are effectively frozen at the point of user install. Making even the slightest change means waiting until your next update makes its way through the various app stores and even then, you can’t be sure that all of your users will update quickly, if at all.

Is Eye Tracking going to revolutionize the mobile app world ?

Gaze or Eye Tracking Technology has made this desire come to pass. Now you can navigate on your computer, smartphone and tablets just by moving your eyes.

Eye-tracking uses the front camera for detecting the motion of your eyes and simultaneously the phone will compute where you are looking on the phone. If you want to scroll on a page the eye-tracking will scroll the page up, down, right and left. Eye-tracking software on your phone can also comprehend the blink of your eyes as a click for selecting something on your phone. Read more.

Tablets now account for more web traffic than smartphones

The importance of tablets to ecommerce is well-documented, with research consistently showing that the devices convert at a much higher rate than smartphones.
And new data from Adobe shows global websites are now getting more traffic from tablets than smartphones, at 8% and 7% of monthly page views respectively.
This is particularly impressive considering that the device only came to market three years ago, and it’s also good news for ecommerce sites.

Analytics Blog: 5 Things You Should Be Doing With Google Mobile Ap...:
When an app crashes, it disrupts the user experience, may cause data loss, and worst of all, might even cause users to uninstall the app altogether. As developers, we do our best to minimize crashes, but no app is ever perfectly stable.

A crash can actually represent a great opportunity to improve an app and one of the best things we can do as developers is to measure our crashes and exceptions. Measuring crashes in your app can help you make better a product, make more money (if that’s your thing), and use your development resources more efficiently (especially if you are the only developer).

Google Mobile Ads Blog: Protecting our mobile ad network

Google Mobile Ads Blog: Protecting our mobile ad network: We recently described some of the work that we do to keep ads safe , and our broader efforts to protect against invalid activity in the AdSense network. Here are some of the ways that we’re protecting ads on mobile networks.

We’ve adapted many of our systems for protecting desktop ads to do the same for mobile ads. These include automatically discarding invalid traffic as it occurs, refunding any money from this traffic, and investigating each and every claim to make our systems better. You can learn more about why and how we do this in the Ad Traffic Quality Resource Center.

Mobile Advertising Ecosystem Explained

We are in the post-PC era, and soon billions of consumers will be carrying around Internet-connected mobile devices for up to 16 hours a day. Mobile audiences have exploded as a result.
Mobile advertising should be a bonanza, similar to online advertising a decade ago. However, it has been a bit slow off the ground, and its growth trajectory is not clear cut.

Inside AdSense: Social Fridays: See how your content was shared on...: Every Friday, we’re posting Google+ tips to help publishers make the most of all of the features and resources available. Be sure to check ...

With Ripples, you can now see how your public content was reshared over time on Google+, and what users were saying about it. To try it out, just find a public post and select ‘View Ripples’ from the drop-down menu in the upper right-hand corner of the post. You’ll see a number of circles that each correspond to a user that has reshared your content, and inside the circle you’ll see the people who have reshared the link from that person (and so on). Circles are roughly sized based on the relative influence of that person -- so the larger a person’s circle is, the more reshares have resulted from their original reshare.

Mobilizing the Web

 Gives a Lots Of Opportunities

Mobile web is the accessing of the internet via wireless devices such as smart phones and tablet computers.
According to the International Telecommunications Union, the mobile access to the internet exceeded desktop computer based access for the first time in 2008. This phenomenal success of the mobile web is in part due to the smart phone revolution and the advent of the tablet computers.

Smart phones are equipped with multicore processors and come with various input options such as touch screens, accelerometers, GPS receivers etc. These coupled with modern mobile operating systems make a solid platform for accessing the internet.
In the beginning, mobile web comprised lightweight web pages which were optimised for smaller screens and lower resolutions and written in Extensible Hypertext Mark-up Language (XHTML) or Wireless Markup Language (WML). Because of this this, the mobile browsing experience was never even close to that on a computer. But with the progress in technology which enabled for faster mobile processors and better mobile browsers, modern mobile devices are moving beyond these limitations by supporting a wider range of Web formats, including variants of HTML commonly found on the desktop Web.

Advertisers have realized the potential of mobile web and are increasingly using it as a platform to reach consumers. In 2007 the total value of mobile advertising was estimated to be in excess of 2 billion dollars. This fact in itself speaks volumes about the growing size and weight of the mobile web.
The major problems with the mobile web faces is the fragmentation of platforms and the resulting lack of standards. The development of standards is one approach being implemented to improve the interoperability, usability, and accessibility issues surrounding mobile web usage.

The Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) is a new initiative set up by the W3C to develop best practices and technologies relevant to the Mobile Web. The goal of the initiative is to make browsing the Web from mobile devices more reliable and accessible. The main aim is to evolve standards of data formats from Internet providers that are tailored to the specifications of particular mobile devices. The W3C has published guidelines for mobile content, and is actively addressing the problem of device diversity by establishing a technology to support a repository of device descriptions.
Many of the technologies which were once considered to be a part of the computers have literally moved "out of the box". The way digital music has almost totally moved from computers to iPods, internet seems to be moving towards the mobile devices. After all its much more convenient to have all the web in the palm of your hands than to have it sitting on the top of your table! This is opening new frontiers and is nothing less than a complete revolution in its own.

Apps Dominate Mobile Time Spent Accessing Travel in U.S. August 29, 2012 As the summer travel season comes to a close, Nielsen looked at the usage of travel-related mobile apps and websites during June 2012. Findings showed that U.S. Android and iOS users spent 95 percent of their time accessing travel information from travel apps, versus only 5 percent from the mobile Web. This discrepancy was largely driven by Google Maps—the top Travel category app and mobile website during June—which accounted for 78 percent of all mobile time spent on Travel. Americans’ decision on whether to open an app or their mobile Web browser depends on the type of travel information they seek. The Cruise Lines category was exclusively accessed through the mobile Web, while 98 percent of time spent browsing map/navigation information was through an app. The Travel Destinations/Theme Parks category seemed to have the most balanced usage among smartphone owners, as 54 percent of time spent was through an app and 46 percent via mobile Web. Mobile social networking is good news for startups on web.

The majority of consumers worldwide will soon have smartphones. Smartphones are about the most important thing to happen to social networking since Harvard sent its acceptance letter to Mark Zuckerberg.
Smartphones know where you are, who your friends are, who's nearby, and soon thanks to NFC, they'll know what you're buying and where. They are the key element of the next, mobile phase is social networking.

Facebook is the power hitter in social networking today, and is likely to drive the most activity and a fair share of the innovation in social networking in 2012. But it's not the only company driving things forward. Google+, Twitter and Linkedin is also in this business.

Facebook is serious about mobile social networking, but it is not the leader in this space in terms of design or technology. Smaller companies, like Path and Milk (with its first app, Oink) are coming out with new takes on mobile interaction. Square could play in this economy as well. All these services will likely use Facebook's network to put people or businesses or in touch with each other in new ways. More specialized mobile networks (really riders on top of Facebook) will appear this year.
